The LAB color space is based on the theory that a color cannot be both blue and yellow at the same time. Therefore, a single value can be used to describe the red/green and yellow/blue special emblems. When CIE L*a*b* is used for a color, L* means lightness value; a* means red/green and b* means yellow/blue value.

The CIE LCH color model uses the same color space as L*a*b*, but it uses L to represent the lightness value; C represents the saturation value and H represents the column coordinate of the hue angle value.
