10,000 portable XRF analyzers with integrated camera and 4,000 analyzers with small spot capabilities sold
“This is a very exciting milestone for us and we owe it all to our terrific customers,” said Lisa Witte, Vice President and General Manager, Thermo Scientific Portable Analytical Instruments. “We thank our customers for their support and loyalty over the years, and will continue to develop breakthrough products that improve the way they do business.”
First introduced in 1998, the Thermo Scientific Niton series of handheld XRF analyzers has been sold in over 100 countries, and in 2008, an integrated camera and small spot capabilities were added to the analyzers.
These x-ray fluorescence instruments enable users to analyze samples with either an 8mm spot size or collimate the beam to 3mm, with simple push of a button. Common industry applications for the technology include weld analysis, identification of toxic metals in toys, RoHS compliance, and geochemical analysis of veins in core samples from mining exploration.
Combining ease of use with superior accuracy, the handheld Niton XL2 and Niton XL3t analyzers provide rapid, comprehensive analysis of up to 32 elements simultaneously, with superior accuracy and precision. The testing protocol is nondestructive, so no material is lost or damaged in the testing process. Offered in a value package, the instrument comes standard with a battery and battery charger, software, PC connection cables and locking carrying case.

Hong Kong tainted water scare 2015
A number of Hong Kong’s housing estates found themselves at the centre of a tainted water scandal after tests commissioned by the Democratic Party in June 2015 showed that samples taken from tap water in Kai Ching Estate in Kowloon City contained amounts of lead exceeding WHO standards. Subsequent tests by the government showed water samples from at least two other public estates, in Kwai Chung and Sha Tin, also contained excessive lead.
According to RTHK’s news, The Development Secretary, Paul Chan, said a contractor responsible for water pipes was suspected of using welding materials that contained lead. He said that would be a breach of the law and the contractor could face prosecution.
According to HKSAR’s Press Releases, In assisting the WSD (Water Supplies Department) to conduct on-site investigation, the GL (Government Laboratory) will use a portable rapid testing device to initially test whether a water supply component contains lead by employing a rapid and non-destructive detection technique, namely X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.
